INTERVIEW TO MISTY MOUNT, AUTHOR OF THE "SHADOW GIRL"

Hi everyone! Sorry for the delay with which I post this interview, but yesterday was a long long day for me. I had to go in another city to take part to a course for my job. Anyway, this is my first interview to an American author. I hope you like it!

INTERVIEW TO MISTY MOUNT, AUTHOR OF THE SHADOW GIRL 

1. Hi, Misty! Welcome to “Fantasticando sui libri”. Would you like to introduce yourself to my Italian readers?
Ciao, Misty! Benvenuta in "Fantasticando sui libri". Ti va ti presentarti ai lettori italiani del blog?

Hi, thanks for having me! My real name actually is Misty Mount (most people think it’s a pen name^^) I’m a caregiver, wife and mother by day and I do most of my writing at night when I should be sleeping.
Ciao, grazie per avermi accolto! Il mio nome è davvero Misty Mount (sebbene molte persone pensino sia un nom de plume). Sono un'infermiera e una madre di giorno e passo la maggior parte del mio tempo a scrivere di notte quando dovrei dormire.

2. When did you start writing?
Quando hai iniziato a scrivere?

I started writing at age five when my kindergarten teacher read me a book that had the most disappointing ending. I decided to rewrite it and quickly went on to writing my own stories. My mother still keeps all my handwritten and illustrated stories from back then. (They’re all quite silly.)
Ho iniziato a scrivere quando la mia maestra della scuola materna mi ha letto un libro che aveva un finale super deludente. Ho deciso di riscriverlo a modo mio, e subito ho iniziato a scrivere le mie storie. Mia mamma conserva ancora tutte le mie storie scritte a mano e i disegni che le riguardano da allora. (Sono tutte un po' stupide.)

3. Do you have rituals or things that you do usually, when you’re writing a novel?
Svolgi dei rituali precisi o ci sono cose che di solito fai quando stai scrivendo un romanzo?

I always start with an outline and usually map out about half of my story before I get impatient and start writing. Then I write until I get stuck and don’t know where to go and back to the outline it is.
Inizio sempre dall'outline e faccio uno schema di circa metà della mia storia prima di diventare impaziente e iniziare a scrivere. Poi scrivo fino a quando non mi blocco e non so come fare a riprendere la storia da dove l'avevo lasciata, perdendo l'outline.

4. The synopsis of “The Shadow Girl” drawn me to your book the first time I’ve read it, because it touches a theme close to many preteens and most teens. How did you get the idea of writing of Zylia? Did you do some researches with teens?
La sinossi di "The Shadow Girl" mi ha attratta al tuo libro la prima volta che l'ho letta, perché tratta un tema caro a molti preadolescenti e adolescenti. Come ti è venuta l'idea di scrivere di Zylia? Hai svolto qualche ricerca con dei preadolescenti?

The story of Zylia is intensely personal because her anxious personality mirrors my own at her age. I was inspired by my young cousin as well, who was Zylia’s age when I started the book. We share similar personalities and we both suffer from anxiety disorders. So anytime I had trouble remembering just how it was in middle school I would inundate her with questions.
La storia di Zylia è profondamente personale, perché le sue ansie rispecchiano le mie alla sua età. Mi sono ispirata a mio cugino, il più giovane, che aveva la stessa età di Zylia quando ho iniziato a scrivere il libro. Noi abbiamo personalità simili ed entrambi soffriamo di disturbi d'ansia. Ogni volta che ho difficoltà a ricordare com'era la scuola media, la inondo di domande.

5. Going out of the comfort zone it’s part of the quest Zylia has to do in order to avoid to vanish from the world. What did you do, as a writer, out of your comfort zone that challenged you?
Uscire dalla propria comfort zone è parte dell'avventura che Zylia deve intraprendere per evitare di sparire dal mondo. Cosa hai fatto, in quanto scrittrice, per uscire dalla tua comfort zone?

Honestly just showing my work to an editor and then to a publisher and now to the public...every part of that is out of my comfort zone. It feels like baring my soul to strangers and letting them pick it apart, which, for an introvert like me is incredibly difficult.
Onestamente il solo mostrare il mio lavoro a un editor e poi ad un editore, e infine al pubblic.... Ogni parte di esso è fuori dalla mia comfort zone. E' come denudare la mia agli sconosciuti e lasciarli prenderne parte è, per un'introversa come me, molto difficile.


6. Will Zylia discover why her Aunt Angelica disappeared from the world? Could you give us some hint?
Zylia scoprirà perché sua Zia Angelica è scomparsa? Puoi darci qualche indizio?

I feel the story ties up loose ends pretty well and you’ll definitely get answers to the mystery, it just might not be what you expect.
Sento che la storia risolve le questioni rimaste in sospeso molto bene e voi potrete scoprire ciò che si cela dietro il mistero. E potrebbe non essere ciò che vi aspettate.

7. What was the most difficult part of the book to write?
Qual è stata la parte più difficile da scrivere del libro?

I like to write things I know in an atmospheric way in hopes the reader can believe the story is really happening. The hardest part was probably writing the fantasy aspects of the book. But once I got comfortable with it, it was the most enjoyable part.
Mi piace scrivere delle cose che conosco in modo da fare in modo che il lettore possa davvero credere che ciò che succede nella storia sia vero. La parte più difficile da scrivere è stato sicuramente l'aspetto fantasy del libro. Ma una volta aver preso la mano con esso, è diventata la parte più piacevole.

8. What’s the message “The Shadow Girl” sends to our young readers?
Qual è il messaggio che "The Shadow Girl" manda ai nostri giovani lettori?

I hope the message will be to pay attention to the people least noticed in this world and that no matter what our personality type; we all have value.
Spero che il messaggio sia quello che prestare attenzione alle persone che non vengono mai notate in questo mondo e che non importa quale sia il nostro tipo di personalità, noi tutti valiamo.

9. Was it difficult to describe the loneliness in which Zylia lives in?
E' stato difficile descrivere la solitudine in cui vive Zylia?

No, it was a little too easily actually. The hardest part was revisiting that difficult age in my life without mentally lingering.
No, è stato fin troppo facile a dir la verità. La parte più difficile è stata rivivere quell'età difficile della mia vita senza dilungarmi.

"Mi stavo chiedendo cosa un vero psichiatra avrebbe fatto di me quando l'assordante plop di una moneta che s'inabissava nell'acqua risuonò attorno a me non appena me ne andai. Non potevo vedere la persona che l'aveva lanciata, a causa di uno spesso strato di vegetazione, ma potevo sentire la voce femminile dire ad alta voce: "Vorrei non essere sola."
